Big news for the Bay of Plenty building community — our very own Tony Biesiek has been appointed as Local Chapter Lead Tauranga for the Passive House Institute of New Zealand (PHINZ).

For those who know Tony, this appointment comes as no surprise. As our chief imaginier and fearless leader, Tony has long been passionate about where great design meets building science. His sustained interest in the global Passive House movement — and years of engagement with PHINZ — have positioned him as exactly the kind of person Tauranga needs at the table.

So what does this mean in practice? PHINZ operates at the heart of three critical areas: Education, Research, and Advocacy. As Local Chapter Lead, Tony will be the Tauranga voice in those national conversations — helping to connect our local building design and construction industry with the science, standards, and benefits behind Passive House principles.

Passive House isn't just a certification. It's a methodology rooted in physics — airtight envelopes, continuous insulation, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, and careful attention to thermal bridges. Buildings designed this way are healthier, quieter, more comfortable, and dramatically more energy-efficient. For a region like Tauranga, where our housing stock has room to grow, that matters.

Tony is looking forward to working alongside local architects, designers, builders, and developers to explore how Passive House thinking can be applied — practically and affordably — to projects of all scales.

Whether you're curious, sceptical, or already convinced, this is your invitation to get involved. Watch this space for upcoming events, workshops, and resources as Tony gets the Tauranga chapter moving.

Welcome to the role, Tony. Tauranga's buildings are going to be better for it.
