Tony Biesiek

Design Director | Founder

Tony Biesiek’s journey into architecture began long before formal training or professional projects. As a young boy he simply loved drawing houses. What started as playful sketches soon became more detailed, evolving into floor plans and design ideas well beyond his years. By the age of 10, Tony had already produced his first house plan, proposing a renovation for the family home.

Tony’s father was a builder, and this provided the perfect environment for those early design ideas to take shape in the real world. Learning the trade alongside his dad, Tony gained hands-on building experience from an early age. At 12 years old, he designed and built his first project, a hut, putting his imagination and practical skills to work.

His interest in design continued to grow through his school years, expanding into furniture design and small building projects. As an apprentice builder, Tony completed one of his first commissioned projects, a girl’s playhouse for a family friend, which remarkably is still in use today.

Having earned his stripes on the tools and developed a strong understanding of construction, Tony decided to take his passion for design further. He enrolled at the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT), where he completed a Diploma in Architectural Design. This qualification opened the door to the architectural profession and set the foundation for the career that followed.

Soon after entering the industry, Tony established his own design studio, Imagine Building Design, which later evolved into Imagine Architecture. Today, with more than 30 years of experience in the building and architectural industries, Tony leads the practice as Design Director, specialising in high-performance, sustainable architecture.

Tony is a Certified Passive House Designer, and his work focuses on buildings that are not only visually compelling but also comfortable, efficient, and enduring. His philosophy centres on designing spaces that perform exceptionally well while responding thoughtfully to their environment.

Outside of architecture, Tony is a passionate cricketer and family man. He has played competitive cricket since the age of eight and currently represents Papamoa and Kaipaki Cricket Clubs. Tony has also competed in the New Zealand Masters Cricket competition representing Taranaki, earning both gold and silver medals in recent tournaments.

When he’s not designing buildings or playing cricket, Tony enjoys spending time with his partner Jackie, their children, and Basil the Jack Russell Terrier, who keeps a close eye on studio life.

Tony’s lifelong journey from sketching houses as a child to leading a nationally recognised architectural practice continues to shape the philosophy behind Imagine Architecture: thoughtful design, practical understanding of construction, and buildings created to stand the test of time.
